Horses and Colic horse colic in horses prevention

As a veterinary student I was taught that 90% of all colics in horses is due to intestinal parasites, however 50 years experience with my own horses have taught me this is not entirely true. For millions of years the horse's ancestors have survived with their parasites without the intervention of horse worming medication, veterinary treatment etc. Why? Because they existed in a pristine clean environment, free to run and exercise, and breed only with the survival of the fittest members.

Mother Nature weeded out the weak gene pool by predators and natural death. Man has mucked up the species again with selective breeding not for strength of genes, but for conformation and speed, held them captive in small enclosures, and subjected them to a yearly scheduled program of multiple drug toxicities of vaccination and worming medications.

Add to that the increasingly polluted water with heavy metals and chemicals, hay and grains heavily sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and fungicides so that now we no longer have the strong healthy stock of horses originally populating this earth, but a gene pool of weakened constitutions and individually so toxic that we are seeing colic, liver and kidney failure, azoturia (muscle-tie up), and chronic lameness in epidemic proportions.

I lost my share of beloved horses with colic over the years until I learned holistic alternative medicine. I learned the body's health exists on two levels: the physical and the energetic

(acupuncture energy flow of Life Force or "chi" within all cells of all organs). Disturbance of the balanced energy Chi that makes up the electromagnetic energy field of the body (EMF) would manifest in illness and pain in the physical body. Chemicals, vaccinations and all medical drugs have an EMF of their own, but is destructive energy to the natural animal EMF. The first physical organs to suffer are the digestive and immune system.

Colic in my horses stopped when I stopped using vaccinations and worming. I substituted the safer alternative of homeopathic and worming remedies. COLIC IS A REAL LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY but until professional help arrives you can help your horse. Fortunately, colic due to intussusception( telescoping in of the small intestine,) or torsion (twisting of the intestine) which require surgical intervention, are infrequent. Most colics are simple spastic, impacted, or constipation with inflation of the bowel with gases.

Have two strong people interlock arms under the horse's belly and thrust arms upward against belly several times at the rate of counting "one thousand and one" (lift and jiggle belly), "one thousand and two" (repeat lifting and jiggling belly of horse) for a dozen times or so; sometimes this will rearrange the intestines and relieve gas pressure.
Acupressure massage to colic points on the face and hindleg (refer to charts). These are bilateral points Stomach 2 (S2) on side of face near superficial vein, and Stomach 36 (S36) on the lateral side upper part tibia below knee joint, Governing Vessel 1 ( GV 1-one point only on midline on ventral side of tail). Massage firmly for about 1 minute several times.
Give oral homeopathy to relieve pain and spasm of intestines, and ease anxiety: Several pellets of Dr. Dodd's Homeopathic Colic 30C, and 2 droppers full Calming Essence , mixed with 2 oz. water in plastic squirt bottle. Dose every 10 minutes for 1 hour then 1 x hourly thereafter, until Vet arrives.
Walk the horse if possible. If very weak, conserve horse's strength.
